What We Do
At Rebuilding Pastoralist Livelihoods Organization (REPAL), our work focuses on transforming the lives of pastoralist, agro-pastoralist, and fisherfolk communities across Northern Kenya.
We believe that sustainable development can only be achieved when people, nature, and governance systems work in harmony.
Our programs are built around six interconnected pillars that address the root causes of poverty, environmental degradation, and inequality — helping communities build resilience, protect their ecosystems, and create pathways to prosperity.
Climate Resilience & Environmental Conservation
The Challenge
Northern Kenya’s drylands face severe land degradation, deforestation, and recurring droughts — threatening livelihoods and biodiversity.
Our Response
REPAL promotes community-led ecosystem restoration by combining indigenous conservation knowledge with modern climate-smart practices.
Our interventions include:
Forest and rangeland restoration through tree planting and reforestation.
Climate change adaptation training for pastoralists and farmers.
Establishing community tree nurseries and green enterprises.
Engaging youth and women in environmental stewardship.
Impact Highlights
Over 15,000 trees planted and 15 nurseries established.
30,000 seedlings grown for community and school greening projects.
Food Security & Sustainable Livelihoods
The Challenge
Pastoralist communities face frequent food shortages and limited income opportunities due to harsh climatic conditions and market barriers.
Our Response
We empower households to diversify income and improve nutrition through sustainable, locally-driven solutions.
Our initiatives focus on:
Climate-smart agriculture and irrigation.
Beekeeping, agroecology, and microenterprise development.
Strengthening value chains for dryland crops and livestock products.
Promoting energy-saving technologies and kitchen gardens.
Impact Highlights
50 beehives distributed to women and youth groups.
100+ farmers trained in smart agriculture and irrigation.
30 energy-saving stoves distributed to promote clean energy.
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
The Challenge
Access to clean and safe water remains one of the biggest challenges in Northern Kenya, affecting health, education, and productivity.
Our Response
REPAL improves access to clean water and promotes hygiene practices that enhance public health and climate resilience.
Our work includes:
Rehabilitation of boreholes and water catchments.
Installation of water storage and harvesting systems.
Hygiene education campaigns at community and school levels.
Training on climate-resilient water management.
Impact Highlights
Dozens of boreholes and water points rehabilitated.
Hundreds of households now accessing safe water.
Governance, Land Rights & Peacebuilding
The Challenge
Pastoralist communities often face land conflicts, weak governance structures, and limited voice in decision-making processes.
Our Response
We promote good governance, land rights awareness, and peaceful coexistence through advocacy and community dialogue.
Our interventions include:
Supporting communities in land tenure advocacy and social accountability.
Facilitating peace dialogues and conflict resolution forums.
Promoting human rights, legal empowerment, and budget monitoring.
Running local radio programs on governance and civic education.

Advocacy influenced county budget allocations to health facilities.
Supported Karare Land Excision Initiative, promoting fair land use.
Education & Youth Empowerment
The Challenge
Youth in pastoralist regions often face limited access to quality education, mentorship, and employment opportunities.
Our Response
We equip youth with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to become drivers of peace and development.
Our programs focus on:
Youth mentorship, entrepreneurship, and vocational training.
Peacebuilding through sports, arts, and cultural events.
